Stercom Ultracapacitor System ensures reliable acceleration of Germany’s most advanced launch coaster

The new roller coaster “Voltron Nevera powered by Rimac” at Europa-Park is more than a highlight for thrill-seekers — it’s a showcase of modern energy infrastructure in the amusement industry. In collaboration with coaster manufacturer Mack Rides, Stercom developed and delivered a high-performance energy storage system based on ultracapacitor technology to reliably supply the extreme power demands during the coaster’s acceleration phases.

Challenge: Launch Peaks of up to 2.5 MW
The Voltron Nevera is equipped with several linear motor launches that catapult the train forward within seconds. These launch events generate extremely high peak loads, which would place an enormous burden on the grid if covered conventionally.

The Solution: Stercom Ultracap Power Booster
To relieve the grid and provide the required energy in milliseconds, Stercom’s ultracap-based high-power storage systems come into play. These systems are designed specifically for applications requiring:

  • Extremely short charging and discharging cycles
  • Very high pulse currents
  • Outstanding cycle life (> 1 million cycles)

  • P_load: Power required by the coaster for propulsion
  • P_uc: Power discharged or absorbed by the ultracap system

💡 It’s easy to see: During all three acceleration phases, the energy storage system reliably absorbs the extreme load. During braking (negative load), energy is recuperated and stored — enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
